about

Magic Ritmo returns with their second release, a highly demanded reissue of ‘G.F.X. - Eternal’ originally released in 1990.

Shrouded in mystery, the record has gained cult status among veteran ravers, record collectors and those who are allured by the spiritual and ethereal quality the record embodies. Magic Ritmo is delighted to lift the cloak and share the story of the record and artist through a fully licensed and remastered release.

G.F.X. is the alias of Geoff Waterston, a musician, producer and engineer from the coastal town of Whitley Bay, North East England. G.F.X. was born from a youth spent tampering with electronics, taping drum beats off the radio and resourcefully discovering his creativity. Performing originally locally, G.F.X. quickly became a name spotted on the line up of many acid house nights that were popping up across the North east, as the area began to receive their first transfusion of acid house.

Often hidden away from the archives documenting this time, the North East of England was a pivotal and culturally rich scene amongst the acid house movement. Most prominently, and fondly spoken of, was Middlesbrough’s ‘Butter Loggie’, a bizarre sounding party that grew to crowds as big 10,000 youths partying at the Herlingshaw Centre in Eston, a community centre by day and place of pilgrimage by night for those eager to experience the beginning of acid house. G.F.X. performed regularly at the Butter Loggie and recalls the impact and ferality of the event, a wild and loose party where the soundsystem shook through your bones. These early experiences provided Geoff with his first glimpses of spirituality, which provided much of the inspiration behind the EP’s title track ‘Eternal’.

The story and legacy of ‘Eternal’ lives on, remastered and reimagined through the lens of Magic Ritmo.
Limited 500 copies.
180g vinyl including inserts.

We would like to thank Geoff and Zara for their trust in us and allowing us the honour of putting this important piece of culture back into the world.

"Eternal was a snapshot of a time when an opening up of alternative lifestyles, spirituality, political activism and music were creating an overall sense of freedom and separation from mainstream society.
And for the first time in my life, I felt a sense of peace and belonging that I had never experienced before and that's where eternal emerged from"

“‘Eternal’ has been with me for over 30 years. From the airwaves of “Wear FM” and “Happy Houses” of Sunderland in 1991, to the sunsets of Bali and back to the “Suono” Bank Holiday parties in The Tanners, Newcastle. Around the world, for an out of this world, piece of music.” - Antony Daly, 586 Records

“I used to play GFX some years ago. This track is supreme! I love all the textures and the arrangement is very emotional and beauty. I’m very happy for this reissue. Congrats!“ - Paula Tape

“I remember hearing about the Eternal EP via a conversation at a record shop here in Glasgow that I used to work at around 2017 or 2018. Tracking down a copy and doing a bit of research, it was a surprise to see that Geoff was based in Whitley Bay, about 10 minutes down the road from where I spent my childhood in the North East, in a town called Tynemouth. With retrospect, it is self-evident that the acid house boom reached more or less every provincial pocket of the UK (there's a known-to-be-true rumour that former Glasgow DJ Richard Thomason was the first to play it on Shetland), but in the UK it feels like so much of the dialogue around reminiscing this era is London-centric. Anyway, part of my point here for a little bit of light humour is that some years later when I was going to play in Berlin (GFX tunes in tow) an older local friend and big record collector happened to mention to me that despite having bought the Eternal EP upon release, he always thought it originated from Harrow. Indeed, the fact many copies made it out there without the info sticker and with different stamps has certainly helped add to the mystique of this record over the years. What was the story behind this spacey, alien-esque vocoder track with such a catchy melody and killer programming? Did many copies make it outside of the UK? A discogs reviewer has mentioned it was big on the radio in Sunderland back in 1990/1991 - was anyone from sleepy Tynemouth soundtracking 6AM afters with this one on their stereo?

Both in and of its time and existing 'eternally', both this beautiful downtempo cut and the almost Crimewatch meets Belgian New Beat of 'The Chill' has recently seen it in demand across the world. I'm very happy to see it get a new lease of life and since first hearing it there has always been an interesting sense of false nostalgia attached to it for me, as if it is hard not to associate Geoff's music with those childhood surroundings and the experiences of rave and electronic dance music that were yet to come after I'd left.” - Fergus Clark, 12th Isle
